Medicine Wind Oriental Pentatonic Flute (D)
The Medicine Wind Oriental Pentatonic Flute is made by hand in Florida, USA, by George Tortorelli, a flute maker with more than 35 years of experience.
It plays in the D minor pentatonic scale. It is a rather large flute, however, it has only 4 finger holes, and therefore you only have to use two fingers per hand. This is a big, deep sounding flute that people with smaller hands can play as well!
This flute is very similar to the Oriental Flute that Erik the Flutemaker makes.
How to play this flute?
- Aim your airflow against the edge of the embouchure hole
- This requires some practice and patience
- The flute is held horizontally, this too requires some practice
- There's 4 fingerholes on top
- Cover the holes with the pad of the fingers, not the fingertips
The musical possibilities
- Easily plays in the minor pentatonic scale
- It is possible to 'bend' notes by sliding your finger off the hole
- You can achieve a similar effect by rolling the flute
- It has a reach of two octaves.
